Brief History of Austin #5
A meeting was held in the afternoon of January 23, 1923, for the purpose of organizing Austin Assembly. This first committee was composed of Sister Hallie Garrett and Kinney and A.E. Houloch. Mrs. Hallie Garrett was the first Mother Advisor. Austin Assembly has had the honor of having two Grand Worthy Advisors. In 1927 Lucy Faulk presided at Grand Assembly which was held in Austin. In 1942, Virginia Reich presided at Grand Assembly Dallas. At this Grand Assembly Session, Mrs. Martha Marie Whitfield was appointed Supreme Inspector for the State of Texas. The Girls have always been the highlight of an Eastern Star Installation when they appeared in their lovely long dresses to perform their drill, after which they presented the Incoming Worthy Matron with a Rainbow Bible and sang the Texas Rainbow song. This courtesy has been extended to their Sponsoring Bodies for many years, and the Bible is often among the Worthy Matron's most prized Memorabilia of her term in the East. For many years the girls have laughed, played and prayed together, making a total Rainbow with all the teachings. The way is sometimes difficult but a girl never fails if she will hold firmly to the hand of faith. We can see this over and over as we dig into our history. Rainbow has strengthened and enriched every girl's life it has touched. Often, years after a girl has completed her Rainbow Journey, she will find herself remembering lines from a lecture given long ago ... words for living. Rainbow is a unique organization - not for everyone, but for those special few. Its teachings are moral, its lessons are scriptural, and its purposes are to enrich young girlhood, laying the foundation for fulfilling womanhood. Aren't we glad we have had an opportunity to play a small part in the history of such a distinguished organization! Long may the years go on in Austin Assembly No. 5, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Many Thanks to Mrs. Mary Anderson, Past Mother Advisor, for her conscientious search of our early history. Mrs. Anderson's earlier work made my job very easy and most enjoyable! It's so much fun to remember the past, and to look to the future. Remember... The past is ours, and the future is yours. For Yesterday is already a Memory; Tomorrow is only a Dream! So Live for Today! (Author of this history is unknown.)
